Hair Restoration Utilizing Microneedling and PRP

before and after of a hair restoration

Microneedling is a cosmetic treatment that aims to address the various effects of aging. Also known as skin needling, the procedure is known to increase collagen production in the skin.

While mainly used as an anti-aging skin treatment, microneedling can also work as a hair restoration procedure. The microneedling device comes with tiny needles that cause many micro-injuries on the skin, which is thought to help regenerate hair follicles through the production of collagen. This leads to new hair growth or thickening of thinning hair as seen in male pattern baldness.

Why Consider Microneedling for Hair Restoration?

Microneedling can treat androgenic alopecia (permanent hair loss on the scalp causing baldness in men) and alopecia areata (sudden hair loss characterized by circular bald patches) because it induces stem cells in the hair follicles.

Additionally, microneedling may promote the absorption of products (such as minoxidil, topical steroids, and platelet-rich plasma) used to treat hair loss.

How Does Hair Restoration Microneedling with PRP Work?

At West Georgia Medicine, our microneedling with PRP hair restoration treatment is safe, effective, and non-surgical.

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, a highly concentrated group of blood cells containing stem cells and growth factors that promote tissue repair, cell growth, healthy cell production, and collagen growth. Thus, when PRP is injected into your hair follicles, it leads to longer and thicker hair regrowth.

To obtain the PRP, we'll draw a small amount of your blood and then place it in a centrifuge to separate the PRP from other components of the blood. The PRP is applied directly to your microneedled scalp to restore the "dead" hair follicles. Your physician may use anesthesia to minimize any discomfort and pain.

We use SkinPen® for all our microneedling procedures because it's the first microneedling device approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). SkinPen creates controlled micro-injuries on the scalp to stimulate the natural wound-healing process, which promotes the hair regrowth process. This microneedling allows for deeper PRP penetration, amplifying the benefits of this hair restoration procedure.

Depending on the severity of your condition, the procedure takes 60-90 minutes. For the best results, the treatment may involve several sessions spaced 3-6 months apart. Even better, hair restoration microneedling with PRP has virtually no risks or adverse effects as the PRP is derived from your own blood.
